The Theology of Thrifting I

Words Matter

Beloved shoppers, gather round 🙏

The researcher in me craves wisdom. The shopkeeper in me needs discernment. With limited time and money, I must know what is bearing fruit and what needs pruning. So, when a new soul crosses the threshold of Born Again Consignment Parlor, I ask a simple question: What brought you here today? I ask not to be nosy, but to understand the calling that led them through our doors.

And lo, many respond, “I love thrifting.” Amen. I would have said the same in my previous life as a consumer, for thrift has become a catch-all gospel—used interchangeably with secondhand, resale, consignment, vintage, and more. But once I become a business owner, the veil was lifted.

Each word has its own meaning. Knowing the difference is not just semantics—it’s salvation for your shopping experience. When you understand the language of resale, you’re better equipped to find the kind of shop that truly meets your needs and aligns with your values.

Now, I must confess: there is no single holy text for this industry. No one source of absolute truth. So in the coming posts, I’ve gathered wisdom from many voices—some harmonious, some contradictory—to share what I believe reflects the prevailing view.

Until then, happy shopping ✨
